What is Dizziness?

Dizziness is a broad term used to describe feelings of unsteadiness or imbalance. When you experience dizziness, you might feel like you are about to fall, or that your surroundings are moving or swaying. It can be a general sense of feeling off balance or unsteady, often described as lightheadedness.

Common Causes of Dizziness:

  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough fluids can lead to dizziness.
  • Low Blood Pressure: Sudden changes in posture can cause dizziness.
  • Inner Ear Issues: Conditions like vestibular neuritis can affect balance.

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo, on the other hand, is a specific type of dizziness where the world seems to spin around you. This spinning sensation is more intense than the general feeling of dizziness and can be likened to the sensation of spinning tops or being on a carousel. Vertigo can be so severe that it disrupts daily activities and can be associated with a condition known as Meniere’s disease.

Common Causes of Vertigo:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Small crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and cause spinning sensations.
  • Meniere’s Disease: A disorder of the inner ear that affects balance and hearing.
  • Vestibular Migraine: Migraines that include vertigo as a symptom

Uncommon causes of vertigo can be diverse and sometimes complex. Here are a few that might not be as widely known:

  1. Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome (SCDS): A rare condition where a thinning or absence of bone overlying one of the inner ear’s semicircular canals causes vertigo and sound-induced dizziness.
  2. Vestibular Neuronitis: Inflammation of the vestibular nerve, usually due to a viral infection, which can cause sudden, severe vertigo and imbalance.
  3. Otosclerosis: A condition where abnormal bone growth in the middle ear affects the function of the inner ear, potentially leading to vertigo and hearing loss.
  4. Cholesteatoma: An abnormal skin growth in the middle ear that can erode the bones of the ear and affect balance, leading to vertigo.
  5. Migraine-Associated Vertigo: Vertigo that occurs alongside migraines, where the vertigo is linked to migraine attacks rather than an underlying vestibular disorder.
  6. Intracranial Tumors: Tumors in the brain or near the brainstem can press on structures involved in balance and cause vertigo as a symptom.
  7. Multiple Sclerosis (MS): MS can affect the central nervous system, including areas involved in balance and coordination, leading to vertigo.
  8. Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (AIED): A condition where the immune system attacks the inner ear, leading to progressive hearing loss and vertigo.
  9. Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): A stroke or mini-stroke can affect the brain regions responsible for balance, causing sudden onset vertigo.
  10. Cerebellar Ataxia: A degenerative disease affecting the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls balance), leading to coordination problems and vertigo.

Meniere’s Disease: A Severe Form of Vertigo / Dizziness

Meniere’s disease is a chronic condition that causes severe and debilitating vertigo. It is characterized by episodes of dizziness, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and a feeling of fullness in the ear. These symptoms can be intense and unpredictable, severely impacting daily life and overall well-being. Meniere’s disease often requires specialized treatment to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

The Role of the Inner Ear, Eyes, and Upper Neck

When diagnosing dizziness and vertigo, medical professionals typically examine the following areas:

  1. Inner Ear: The inner ear houses the balance organs that help regulate our sense of equilibrium. Problems here can lead to vertigo and dizziness.
  2. Eyes: The visual system plays a crucial role in maintaining balance. Issues with vision can contribute to dizziness.
  3. Upper Neck: Proprioception, the sense of where your head is in space, is managed by the upper neck. This system works subconsciously to help your brain understand your body’s position.
