No Fibromyalgia Test

Is there a Test for Fibromyalgia?

Is there a test for fibromyalgia?

We recently received a thoughtful comment on our video regarding fibromyalgia testing:

“I read up on this. Apparently there is no test for fibromyalgia, which concerns me. I have been tested for arthritis and immune diseases, but blood tests came out negative.”

This is a great comment and raises a crucial point about diagnosing fibromyalgia and other similar disorders.

Understanding the Limitations of Testing for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a challenging condition because, as of now, there is no specific blood test or imaging study that can definitively diagnose it. This can be frustrating for patients who have undergone numerous tests, such as blood work, MRIs, or X-rays, only to receive normal results. These tests might rule out other conditions like arthritis or autoimmune diseases, but they don’t always explain chronic symptoms like pain, dizziness, or trouble sleeping.

Common and Uncommon Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Common Symptoms:

  • Chronic Pain: Widespread muscle pain and tenderness, often described as a constant dull ache.
  • Fatigue: Persistent tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest.
  • Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling or staying asleep, often due to pain.
  • Cognitive Issues: Sometimes referred to as “fibro fog,” which includes problems with memory and concentration.

Uncommon Symptoms:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Digestive issues like bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation.
  • TMJ Disorders: Jaw pain and discomfort.
  • Numbness and Tingling: Sensations in the hands or feet that are not always associated with other conditions.
  • Increased Sensitivity: Over-sensitivity to touch, temperature, or even odors.

Why Standard Tests Might Come Back Negative

When standard tests return normal results, it often means that no genetic or autoimmune disease is causing the symptoms. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the symptoms are any less real or distressing. Conditions like fibromyalgia and other functional disorders often involve complex interactions between the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system that are not easily detected with conventional testing methods.

How We Approach Fibromyalgia and Similar Conditions

At our clinic, we take a different approach to diagnosing and treating conditions like fibromyalgia. We use infrared imaging to assess the level of irritation to the nervous system and determine whether issues such as a compressed or irritated brainstem might be contributing to your symptoms.

Infrared imaging can help us understand how much of the pain and functional issues might be related to misalignments in the spine. If the infrared imaging indicates significant irritation, we proceed with additional tests to examine the alignment of the skeletal structures around the affected area.

Our Specialty: Addressing Misalignments

Our specialty lies in identifying and correcting misalignments in the spine that may be contributing to chronic pain and other symptoms. By focusing on these misalignments, we aim to alleviate the pressure on the nervous system and improve overall function.

If you’ve been struggling with chronic pain or symptoms that haven’t been explained by standard tests, we invite you to explore our approach. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive assessment and offer targeted treatments that address the underlying issues contributing to your discomfort.
