Do you suffer from migraines? If so, you’re not alone. Approximately 12% of the U.S. population, or one in every eight people, experience migraines. While the exact cause of migraines remains unclear, new research suggests that a misalignment of the upper neck may be a significant factor.
New Research into Cerebral Venous Flow
We often assume that our blood flows naturally as it should, without needing our attention. Most of the time, this is true. However, for blood to reach the right places in our bodies efficiently, our upper cervical vertebrae must be properly aligned. A misalignment of the Atlas vertebra—the uppermost vertebra on which our head rests—can hinder cerebral venous flow, which is the blood flow from the brain.
According to recent studies, such a misalignment interacts with the Trigeminovascular System. This system consists of neurons in a facial nerve responsible for sensation in the face. It is believed to contribute to headaches by affecting cranial circulation, irritating the nerves. This suggests that your migraines may be caused by these neurons influencing cerebral blood flow.
Upper Cervical Misalignment and Migraines
Another consequence of Atlas misalignment is its potential impact on cerebral blood flow to the brainstem nuclei. This misalignment affects not only blood flow but also the flow of cerebrospinal fluid—the fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. While research is not yet conclusive, case studies have shown that correcting the Atlas vertebra can improve cerebral blood flow and the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to the brain and body.
What Does This Mean for You?
If you suffer from migraines, you don’t have to accept them as a permanent condition. Medication might alleviate symptoms temporarily, but it may not address the root cause. Considering upper cervical alignment could be an essential step toward reducing or eliminating your migraines.
