Pain Is Normal…Right?

Learn the truth about chronic pain, and what can be done to fight it

It is always surprising to me when I have a conversation with someone and they comment,

“Oh, you know….I get the normal amount of headaches, just a couple per week.”

My immediate thought is WOW! You are getting several headaches per week- there is nothing “normal” about that!

Pain or headaches aren’t something that a person should experience on a regular basis; pain is a warning sign to the body that there is something abnormal or malfunctioning.

Most pain is interpreted by a cluster of cells in the base of the skull. This area of the brain receives the information from the affected area of the body and registers it as pain.

Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts longer than 6 months.  An astounding 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain.  Chronic pain may be mild to severe pain that doesn’t seem to go away, and often times may be associated with fatigue, poor sleep quality, depression, or changes in mood.

Often times, pain can stem from a past injury or accident. Pain doesn’t always have to show up immediately after a trauma, it may not show up until months or years later.

If you have ever had a whiplash injury, concussion or other injury to the neck or spine, it is likely that you have suffered an undetected injury to your upper neck.

A misalignment in the upper cervical spine (neck) can affect the function of the brainstem and nervous system, creating pain and dysfunction in the body.

An evaluation by an upper cervical chiropractor will help you discover if a misalignment in the neck could be contributing to your chronic pain. The goal of upper cervical is to correct spinal misalignment and restore normal function to the brain stem or nervous system, correcting the root cause of the pain instead of treating the symptoms.
