Brain Processing & Learning Disorders

Many learning disorders are actually neurological conditions that are cause by dysfunction and/or stress to how the brain works. The brain is supposed to function in many ways like a central computer chip, processing all the of the information send and received from the world around it. If the brain is under stress, and not working well, it will not process information well and this can lead to countless problems including learning disabilities.

Some of the symptoms a child may have if their brain is struggling to process information and learn:

  • Frequently struggles to maintain attention
  • Gets easily distracted
  • Fumbles over words when speaking
  • Has difficulty reading
  • Is accident prone and seems to stumble or trip a lot
  • Is forgetful regarding normal daily activities
  • Often does not seem to be listening during a conversation
  • Squirms or fidgets
  • Struggles to wait for his or her turn
  • Struggles to play quietly or enjoy quiet leisure activities (i.e., reading)
  • Excessive speaking

Clearly, these symptoms can make it difficult for a child to succeed academically in school or even socially with others. It can have similar debilitating effects when it comes to holding down a job or having good relationships as an adult. Therefore, it is important to learn what may be at the root of this neurological conditions to address it.

The spine in general, but especially the upper neck, is extremely important to brain development and the ability of a student to focus and learn. How can that be? The answers lie in the top two bones in the neck, the Atlas (C1) and Axis (C2).

Brain/Brainstem Function

The C1 and C2 protect the sensitive area where the brainstem meets the spinal cord. Even the slightest of misalignments in this area can cause stress to the brain at this level and inhibit proper function. Since all of the messages traveling to and from the brain travel through here, it can lead to various neurological issues.

Blood Flow to the Brain

The cervical vertebrae have tiny loops of bone called vertebral foramen. These loops of bone provide safe passage for the vertebral arteries which bring oxygen-rich blood to the brain. A misalignment can inhibit this proper flow of blood and keep the brain from getting all of the oxygen it needs for proper function.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Drainage

When an upper cervical misalignment inhibits the cerebrospinal fluid drainage, it can start to pool. This may, in turn, lead to increased intracranial pressure. This can cause mental fog and headaches and slow the brain down.

A Gentle and Specific Solution:

In order to relieve these changes and give the body proper time to heal, it is vital to have the misalignments corrected in a very precise manner. That is where upper cervical chiropractic care comes into play.

Upper cervical chiropractors are experts in upper neck alignment. Imaging methods are used to pinpoint even the tiniest of misalignments. Then, low force adjustments are applied to correct these misalignments in a very precise manner. The result is a long-lasting correction that gives the body time to heal from any changes that took place due to the misalignment. Blood can flow properly, the brainstem may be restored to proper function, and cerebrospinal fluid can begin draining properly once again.

If you know of someone suffering from difficulty focusing or any of the many types of learning disorders, especially if they have a history of head or neck trauma, they are a good candidate for this natural form of care. Very often the first trauma is the process of birth! It is best to have an examination performed by a certified upper cervical chiropractor to see if there is a spinal alignment problem holding a child or an adult back.
